Recently Netflix released an original movie called “Dumplin'” and my wife and I just watched it. Here’s what you need to know.
To prove a point about measuring up and fitting in, Texas teen Willowdean Dickson enters a local pageant run by her ex-beauty queen mom.
Willowdean struggles as a chunky teen girl while being made fun of and dealing with a mom who is only interested in beauty pageants. She decides to get back at her mom by joining the local beauty pageant, and in doing so learns all about herself and how to be a strong woman.
What I saw wasn’t what was advertised, in a sense. The movie is promoted as a comedy, when in actuality it is not so much a comedy as it is a drama with a couple funny moments. There were no real LOL moments, but the movie was interesting enough to keep watching, and in the end I was happy I watched it.
It’s a feel good kind of movie that has a simple charm that keeps it going through its long run-time. It could’ve been made shorter by 20 to 30 minutes, but there aren’t really any parts I could recommend taking out, so the whole movie did seem necessary.
I highly recommend this film. Too bad I’ll probably never be able to own this on DVD.
